Welcome to Crete, Rethymno
Crete is the fifth largest island in the Mediterranean with approximately 8,000 square kilometers. The island is right at the point where the continents of Europe, Asia and Africa meet.
Rethymno is the prefecture of Crete and its Capital is the city of Rethymno. The town still maintains its old aristocratic appearance, with its buildings dating back from the 16th century. Arched doorways, stone staircases, Byzantine and Hellenic-Roman remains, small venetian harbor and narrow streets adorn the city.
Fortetza is the old Venetian Castle which is one of the biggest and best standing castles in Crete. Other beautiful sights and monuments found in Rethymno and the surrounding areas include the Neratze mosque (St. Katherine’s Catholic church), the Great Gate (megali porta, Porta Guerra), the Piazza Rimondi (Rimmondi square) and the Venetian Loggia.
Explore also the surrounding areas of Rethymno, Xiro Choria and Plakias just to mention a few. In Plakias, situated on the south coast of the Rethymno prefecture, you will find a beautiful 1300 meter long sandy beach full of small coves. The south-eastern part is used by nudists.
Rethymno is not all sights and beaches. Every year annual festivals are being held i.e. the annual wine festival held in July and another on in on7-8th of November.
Rethymno offers something for everyone, so start exploring…!
