Welcome to Ios
A real treasure in the Cyclades Islands just a stones throw from the popular islands
of Santorini and Myconos in the South Aegean. With a population of 1,838 and a land
area of 110 km², the main town is called CHORA (which in greek means “village”).
With it’s beautiful beaches, blue/green waters, breathtaking scenery and a full program
from dawn to dusk with the bakeries, restaurants, shops and the bars and clubs
rockin’ ‘til the sun comes up. The best of which can be found on the map.
Rent a scooter or car and take a trip around the island. Your journey will take you
past some of the most scenic spots, from the beachs at Koumbara, Agia Theotoki,
Psathi and Mylopotas to one of the most beautiful in Greece - Maganari beach at
the other end of the island. Ios is famed for its abundence of churches, try and take
the time to visit some of the islands churches and especially if you are here in September,
you can not miss Moni Agias Theodoti festival held every year on the 8th of
September.
Also worth a visit are the attractions of Homer’s Tomb, the open air theater, the
Archaeological museum and the old castle. Ios Town, also known as The Village,
is a dazzling mix of white houses and blue domed churches. There are ruins of the
Venetian fortress, built in `1400 by Marco Crispi, remains of the ancient walls, and 12
windmills above the town. The Port has a busy little harbour with yachts and fishing
boats, good fish tavernas and quieter accommodation than Ios town. |
